Chapter 20: The Envelope
Libby's POV
The Harborside Hope Walk started at nine on the last Saturday of June, and I stood at the front of it.
The harbor green was packed with families in pink T-shirts.
There were strollers and balloons, and a banner across the stage that said Hope Walks Together.
I wore the pink shirt too.
At seventeen weeks it fit differently across my middle, and I stood with one hand resting on it.
Wren stood at my left, in sunglasses, with a paper cup of hot coffee.
"If he cries," she said, "I'm going to throw this."
"It's hot."
"That's the point."
Owen came up the side steps at five to nine in a navy suit, with a smile and a phone in his hand.
He looked rested, and sure of himself.
The pearl woman from the gala sat on the board chairs by the stage, her back straight, a folder on her knee.
In the second row, in a pale yellow dress, Delia sat with her ankles crossed.
She caught my eye and gave me a small warm wave.
I waved back.
At the sound table at the back of the green, a tall man in a gray T-shirt checked a cable and did not look at the stage.
Hank had been there since six.
My phone buzzed once.
I'm here. Everything's loaded. Breathe.
I breathed.
At nine, Owen tapped the microphone.
"Good morning, Port Merrow."
The crowd cheered.
It was a good voice.
I had once loved it.
"Five years ago, I made a promise to someone, and I've kept it every day," he said. "This Walk has always been about hope. Today I want to share something personal, and I hope you'll forgive me."
