Chapter 14: Eight O'Clock
At four o'clock Sam had not come, and his phone went straight to voicemail.
At five, the caterers arrived and started unfolding white tablecloths around my arch.
At six, a hundred and forty guests began to come through the doors in silk and tuxedos, and I stood at the side of the ballroom in my good black dress and watched for a gray suit.
"He'll be here," Roz said.
"He said four."
"He also said he'd be back before the reception. It's a reception. It's still happening."
"Roz."
"I'm saying the night is young."
I did not answer, because I had decided something in the corridor the day before, and I had not decided it for Sam.
I had decided it for me.
If he walked in, good.
If he didn't, the paper in my back pocket still said what it said.
The string quartet started, and the room turned toward the arch.
People stopped in front of it and said the word I had built it to make them say.
"Look at that."
"Who did these?"
"The florist, I think. Some girl from High Street."
Some girl from High Street smoothed her dress and held her ground.
Travis found me by the coat check at a quarter to seven.
His suit was perfect and his face was not.
He had a shaving cut under his jaw, and his eyes were pink at the rims.
"Jen." He caught my elbow and pulled me behind a pillar. "Pennell told me this morning. He said you were going to read something at the mic."
"I might."
"Please don't."
"You asked me to sign. I said after the reception."
"In private. You said in private. I heard it, you said anything I liked."
