Chapter 10: The Result
The lab was in a brick building behind a dental supply store, and it smelled like carpet cleaner.
Pete drove me there on Wednesday morning, and my lawyer met us at the door with a folder under her arm.
I had been discharged to bed rest with a long list of rules, and I was breaking all of them.
"The tech will see us in a private room," my lawyer said. "I told them it's a sensitive maternity case. They'll read it to you, and then we'll talk about next steps."
"Just say it plainly."
"I will."
The room had two chairs, a box of tissues on the table and a poster about cheek swabs.
A tech in a lab coat came in with a single sheet of paper and sat down across from me.
She was young, and tired, and kind.
"Mrs. Dolan, we ran the sample you submitted against your own sample, and against the second sample from Mr. Dolan that arrived Monday."
"Ty brought one in?"
"He came in alone, before dawn. He said you'd know."
I hadn't known.
I put my hand on the table.
"Go on."
"The straw yielded a clean profile. A male child, around five years old. We compared it to yours for maternity."
She turned the paper toward me.
My lawyer leaned in to read it at the same time.
Across the bottom, in plain black type, it said: PROBABILITY OF MATERNITY: 99.99%.
Under that was a second line for Ty.
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.99%.
I read it once.
I read it again.
The room went very quiet, and I heard the little fan in the ceiling.
