Chapter 8: Visiting Hours
"I need to see him," I told Ty.
It was Sunday afternoon, and I had been out of the bleeding scare for forty hours.
"See who?" Ty said.
"Eli."
He stared at me.
"I'm not going to hurt him," I said. "I'm not going to scream at him, or at her. I need to look at his face."
"Why?"
"Because your mother changed my locks, sealed my chart and paid for the cremation of a baby that weighed two pounds, and I want to know what else she touched."
He was quiet for a while, and then he nodded.
"I'll bring him."
"Without your mother."
"Without my mother," Ty said.
They came at three, to the hospital's rooftop garden, where the nurses let me sit in a wheelchair under a blanket.
Pete stood by the door with his arms folded, looking like a bouncer who had been told to be polite.
Ty came across the paving stones holding a small hand.
Eli wore a green dinosaur sweatshirt and sneakers with lights in the heels.
Shelby followed three steps behind in a cream sweater, with her purse clutched in both hands.
"Twenty minutes," she said to Ty, before she said hello. "And I'm staying."
"That's fine," I said.
Eli stopped a few feet from my chair and looked me over.
"You're the lady from the TV."
"I am."
"You yelled at Grandma Bernie."
"Eli," Shelby said.
"It's okay," I said. "I did."
"I liked it," he said seriously. "She doesn't let me have the cookies from the good tin."
Pete made a noise that he turned into a cough.
Eli looked at my belly.
"Is that a baby?"
