Chapter 18: The Father
Fitz shut the green door on him.
He turned the lock, even though it was only nine o'clock.
Then he went back behind the bar and poured the welder a ginger ale.
Nobody sat back down for a minute.
"The CEO," the crossword woman said finally. "Is that a lot?"
"It's the whole hospital," I said.
"Huh." She picked up her pen. "Six letters. Bully."
I didn't sleep much that night.
At four in the morning I sat up in Fitz's bed with my glasses on and my laptop on my knees.
"You're making a list," he said into his pillow.
"I'm making a list."
"Who's on it?"

He rolled over and looked at me.
"You're going to the board."
"I'm going to him first. To his face. Before he walks into that room thinking his son's the one who got wronged."
"He won't believe you."
"Probably not."
"Then why?"
"Because nobody ever tells him anything to his face," I said. "And I want him to have heard it once."
The firm was on the thirty-first floor of a glass tower in Center City.
