Chapter 20: The Board
I called the program director at 6:09.
She answered on the first ring.
"If they vote yes," she said, "the CEO signs. Legal drafts it tonight. It can be in the bank's hands by eight."
"If he signs."
"Then make sure he wants to."
The boardroom was on the top floor of the old wing.
At four o'clock there were twelve board members around the table.
The CEO sat at the head, a heavy man in a gray suit, reading glasses on his nose.
Judson's father sat at his right hand.
Judson sat in a chair against the wall behind him, in his white coat.
There were forty chairs for the public.
People stood two deep along the back wall and out into the hallway.
Green T-shirts everywhere.
WE KNOW WHERE SHE WAS.
The welder in his good flannel.
His sister in a wheelchair, a blanket over her knees.
Half the night nurses in the ED, straight off shift.
Jodie and her wife, Jodie with no bat, which had taken an argument.
Fitz stood beside me in his father's tie, holding a shoebox.
