Chapter 13: The Table
Dario read the last line a second time, silently, with his lips moving.
Then he folded the letter along its old crease and put it inside his shirt, against his skin.
"I'm taking this to him," he said.
"I'll come with you."
"No." His voice was steady now, and that frightened me more than the shaking had.
"Not to him alone. In a hallway, Sartori will say an old man cried over a piece of paper."
"Then where?"
"At his table. In front of every man who ever saw Sartori kiss his ring."
I put on my shoes, and we crossed the wet lawn together as the sky went gray.
Giacomo was already awake.
He sat in the armchair in Lily's purple room with his hand resting on the blanket over her feet.
He looked at the two of us in his doorway, me in a man's shirt and Dario with his face wrecked.
He did not ask one question.
"Mr. Orsini," Dario said. "I need you to call everyone to your table today."
Giacomo looked at him for a long moment.
"Everyone," he said.
