Chapter 14: Left at the Gate
The boy was sitting at the Orsini gate when the sun came up.
A night man called it in at ten past six, and Dario was out the door with his coat half on.
I followed him down the drive in my socks.
It had rained again.
The boy sat on his schoolbag in the mud beside the iron bars.
He wore a blue raincoat two sizes too big, and he held his knees to his chest.
His dark hair was plastered flat.
He was shaking so hard that I could see it from forty feet away.
"Don't touch him yet," Dario said, and put an arm across my chest. "Let me check the bag."
"He's six."
"His mother is a Sartori."
He crouched in front of the boy, and his voice dropped lower than I had heard it.
"Hey. I'm going to look in your backpack. Is that okay?"
The boy nodded, with his teeth chattering.
Dario opened the bag and went through it with two fingers.
A lunch box, a plastic dinosaur, a pair of pajamas folded in a square.
He turned the raincoat collar over, and I saw a square of paper pinned to the lining.
He read it, and his jaw set.
