Chapter 20: Her Name
The grave was a flat gray stone in a county field in Elizabeth, with a number on it and no name.
Giacomo stood over it in his hospital sling, and I held his good arm.
The grass had been cut that morning.
Two weeks of rain had left the ground black, and a man was waiting beside the stone with a spade.
"They told me she had no family," Giacomo said. "I paid for the burial and never visited. I told myself a thief didn't deserve flowers."
"You didn't know."
"I knew enough to ask." His voice was thin. "I never asked."
Dario stood three steps behind us, in his black coat, with his arm in its sleeve over the stitches.
He had not said a word since we left the car.
The man with the spade looked at Giacomo.
"Go on," said Giacomo. "Gently."
On Saturday, the Orsini mausoleum stood open under a gray sky, and every boss on the East Coast had come.
There were forty of them, in dark coats and black ties, in rows on the wet lawn.
I saw the Russian at the back with his wool cap over his heart.
I saw men who had sat at that long table a week ago and said nothing while the Sartori boss was dragged away.
