Chapter 5: The Witness
"Willa," Cora said, and her voice broke on it. "Oh, Willa, I've been so worried."
She came three steps toward me before Torin moved off the wall.
He didn't touch her.
He only stood where she would have walked, and she stopped.
"Let her speak," the Regent said pleasantly. "We are all friends here."
Jasper had not looked at me once.
He stood with his hands behind his back and his eyes on the floor.
He had lost weight in a day, or it only looked that way under the chandeliers.
"Alpha Holt," the Regent said. "You were this woman's mate."
"Yes, my lord."
"Tell the hall what she was."
Jasper cleared his throat.
"Willa Ferris came to Cedar Hollow at one year old with her mother, a rogue who died when Willa was nine. My father took her in as his ward."
"She never shifted," he said. "Not once, not even at sixteen. She was wolfless."
A murmur went down the table.
"I mated her because the mark came, and I believed it." He swallowed. "She isn't a lycan, my lord. She isn't anything special. I would know."
That last line was for me.
I knew it, because he still wouldn't look.
"And you, Miss Pell?" the Regent said.
Cora pressed her hand to her chest.
"I love Willa," she said, and her eyes filled right on cue. "She was so kind to me. And she lost the baby, and I think grief does strange things to a person. I don't blame her for believing anything just now."
"You hear that?" the Regent asked the hall. "Compassion. Not malice."
