Chapter 7: The Fuel Bill
Rhiannon's POV
The pay window at the fuel dock opened at noon on Fridays, and the whole deck crew lined up in the cold with their hoods up.
I was fourth.
The window was a square cut in the side of the fuel office, with a ledge and a brass bell.
The clerk behind it was the ferry captain's niece, who would not look at me.
She slid my envelope across the ledge.
It was heavier than it should have been.
I stood there with it in my hand while the man behind me shuffled his boots.
"Is that right?" I said.
"That's what's written," the clerk said, to her ledger.
I opened it.
Eighty-six dollars was my first week at the deck rate, and I had counted it twice on Tuesday.
This week's envelope held two hundred and sixty.
I turned the pay slip over.
Under my name someone had written in blue ink: *Winter differential. Fuel, Etheridge, paid to Dec. 31.*
I read it twice.
It was the Alpha's hand, and I knew it because I had watched it write his name under my father's debt.
