Chapter 9: Pour It Yourself

The great hall was full.

Three hundred wolves sat at long tables under the antlers and the iron chandeliers, and every head turned when I walked in.

I kept my back straight.

Nobody spoke.

Priscilla took my elbow, very gently, and guided me up the center aisle to a small chair at the foot of the dais.

It had no cushion.

Beside it stood a tall carved seat with a cushion of dark red velvet, and on it sat Rhoda Grimshaw, in her pearls, with her chin up.

Cedric was beside her, in his black suit, grey in the face.

He did not look at me.

"Morven Moncrief," Rhoda said, and her voice carried to every wall. "You've been asked here to answer for the harm you've done this pack."

"What harm?" I asked.

A rustle moved through the room.

"You stole two heirs of Black Fir from their father's house in the middle of the night, and carried them across a rival's border."

"They're my children."

"They're Black Fir's children. And the woman who was so careless with them is not fit to hold them."

"I was careless?" I said. "I gave birth on a linen room floor while you stood on the stairs."

Rhoda did not blink.

"She's delirious," she told the hall. "Poor girl. She never had a wolf, and a wolfless woman is not meant to carry a pup, let alone two. It has gone to her head."

Somebody laughed.

Several people laughed.

Priscilla sank gracefully into the chair across the aisle from me, and a servant set a cup in front of her.

She looked at me with real, gentle sorrow.

"Morven, you're shaking," she said. "You must be exhausted. Let me get you a hot drink."
