Chapter 10: Rain
Cara's POV
Paolo came at noon with a lawyer and a leather folder.
Domenico had not come back yet.
I let them into the kitchen because Domenico's man at the door looked at me and I nodded.
My brother kissed my forehead and sat down in the chair Domenico had used.
"You look tired, Cari."
"I killed a Greco dinner yesterday and got shot at on the way home."
"I heard." He took my hand. "I'm so sorry. That's why I want this settled today."
The lawyer, a thin man in a gray suit, laid three papers on the table and said nothing.
"Daniele will sign over the Hudson port shares to you," Paolo said. "That's your marriage portion. It was always yours. He's agreed, in front of two witnesses."
"When?"
"Last night, after you left the hotel." He smiled. "I told him you'd write him the cipher once it was done."
I looked at him for a while.
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to. I know you." He squeezed my fingers. "Sign here as his spouse, giving consent, and it's yours. Then you rest."
The pen lay on the paper in front of me, and I picked it up and put it down again.
"I'll read it first."
"It's boilerplate."
"I read everything," I said. "You taught me that."
He laughed, and the lawyer shifted on his chair.
"Of course," Paolo said. "Take your time. I'll come back tonight."
They left the papers on the table and went out, and Domenico's man closed the door behind them.
I read the first page twice, and then the rain began.
It began hard and cold on the kitchen window, and I carried the pages to the front room where the light was better.
