Chapter 12: Which Book

"Since this morning," I said.

"Since eleven this morning."

"And at nine at night you were still not going to tell me."

"I was going to tell you tonight." Domenico took one step toward me and stopped. "I wanted to be sure the stamp was his before I put your brother in front of you."

"You let me sit across a table from him."

"I was in the hall."

"You let me ask him whether he killed your brother, with the slip in your pocket."

His jaw moved.

"I didn't know he'd say it."

"You knew he'd come," I said. "You knew what he was. And you slept next to me last night with it in your coat."

"That was before the widow."

"You went to the widow after you took me to bed."

He did not answer.

I heard my own voice shaking, and I did not like it.

"You told me you hated me, Domenico. Then you found out my brother did it and you didn't say a word. You let me find out from him, in his own voice, with a smile."

"I wanted it to come from somebody you'd believe."

"I'd have believed you."

"Would you?" His voice sharpened. "Two nights ago you called him the only man who loved you."

"I didn't say that."

"You meant it."

He was right, and I hated him for it.

I picked the canvas bag off the table and put the first ledger in it, and the second ledger in the inside pocket of my coat.

"Where are you going?"

"Rule one. I can leave whenever I want."

"It's pouring."

"Then I'll be wet."
