Chapter 14: The Head of the Table
Genevieve laid her phone on Agnese's oilcloth and turned it so I could read the screen.
Every message came from one number with no name on it, and every one began with the same phrase: By the boss's order.
The one on top said, Tell the Brooklyn captain his marker is paid if he votes the Lombardi paper.
I read it and put the phone down.
"I sent that in March," Genevieve said. "I thought it was a business favor."
"It was a purchase," I said. "Keep the phone in your coat. I want it at the table at six."
She nodded, and her hands stopped shaking when she had something to do with them.
At six that evening the long table had all twelve captains at it, and one chair empty.
The empty one was the wife's chair, halfway down the left side, and nobody sat in it.
Agnese took her old seat by the wall without a word to anyone.
I walked in last, in the green dress, with the keys at my waist and the iron ring on my right hand.
The gray-haired captain looked at the ring and pulled out the head chair.
I did not sit yet.
Daniele came in from the study door in yesterday's suit.
He had not slept, and he did not look at Genevieve.
He stood at the foot of the table, where I had stood for five years, and he spoke to the room.
"Five years ago my wife's brother's lawyers put a stack of marriage papers in front of me," he said. "I signed it unread."
"A rider buried in it gives the Greco port to the Lombardis the day my wife leaves the wife's seat."
Nobody moved.
"She left it last week. The port is already theirs on paper." His voice held. "I did that. I sat my assistant in my wife's chair to make a point, and I handed away your docks to prove I was boss."
