Chapter 12: Frozen
I opened the door in Jude's shirt with my hair down.
The deputy looked at the porch, and at the man standing in my doorway in his jeans, and he cleared his throat.
"Victoria Riordan?"
"Yes."
"Ma'am, I've been asked to serve you with this."
It was a court order on three pages of heavy paper.
I read the first paragraph and the last.
It said that the transfer of the Riordan Trust's shares was frozen for ten days, pending a hearing, while the Trust's terms were reviewed at the request of a shareholder.
"Ten days," I said.
"Until the ninth," Beck said, from the bottom of the steps. "I wouldn't worry. It's only a pause."
He had shaved and put on a clean white shirt.
"Beck," I said.
"Vic."
His eyes moved up to Jude, and down, and up again, taking in the unbuttoned jeans and the bare feet.
"Already," Beck said softly. "Well. That's one way to keep a pilot."
Jude did not move.
"The board meets on Friday," Beck said. "Three outside directors, my mother and me. Until the hearing, every vote that matters goes through us. Merrick's suspension stands."
"Not on my aircraft," I said.
"They aren't your aircraft. Not until a judge says so."
He climbed one step, so he could keep his voice down.
"You and I have the Dinner in sixteen days, Vic. You can stand beside Riordan One in a black dress and smile for the camera and let me thank the family. Or you can keep doing this."
"This?"
"I can tell the state that its new majority owner is a hospice nurse who slept with the night pilot three days after the reading." He paused. "And that she has been under the care of a doctor since the funeral."
