Chapter 19: Crawl

Behind me, the sheets moved.

"What is it?" Santiago said, his voice thick with sleep.

"Gino. On his knees on your front steps. With photographers."

He was quiet a second.

"Do you want me to come down?"

"No." I was already pulling on my scrub pants. "Stay. Ice that leg. You walked a whole party on it."

"Wynn."

I looked back at him.

He was propped on one elbow in the lamplight, his hair a mess, the sheet at his waist.

"Come back up after," he said.

"I'm coming back up."

I put on his shirt over my scrub pants, and his black coat over that, because my jacket was somewhere on the floor and I didn't have time to look.

The coat came down to my shins. It smelled like him.

The doorman was waiting for me by the revolving door, an older man with gold buttons and a face that had seen everything twice.

"I can call the police, ma'am," he said.

"Not yet."

I went out.

The cold hit me in the face. The steps had been salted, but there was new snow on top.

Gino was kneeling on the third step down, bareheaded, in his charcoal overcoat, with his hands on his thighs.

His knees were soaked through. His hair, which was always perfect, was wet and falling in his eyes.
