Chapter 21: Medellín
"Then go," I said.
He looked up at me.
"Come with me," he said.
"No."
He didn't argue. He'd stopped arguing with my no's around Thanksgiving.
"Not on your plane," I said. "Not to that house. Not yet."
"I understand."
"You don't. But you're trying."
I made him walk the bars before he left. Eight lengths. Heel first.
He flew out the next morning.
Christmas was at Peg's.
The parrot wore a tiny Santa hat for a moment and then ate it.

Peg said, "Bring a pie. Store-bought's fine. I'll know if you lie about it."
Santiago called every night at four in the morning his time, when my shift slowed down.
He told me about the uncles' meeting on New Year's Eve.
He'd stood in front of the whole family for three hours without his cane, and they'd let him keep the coffee by one vote.
The first legal shipment would leave the warehouse on the river on January seventeenth.
"Come and see it go," he said. "If you want."
On January second, my bank called.
My accounts were unfrozen. The state's attorney had asked for it.
I sat on Peg's back steps in the cold with my savings on my phone screen.
