Chapter 21: Magnus's POV

Magnus's POV

They put Aldous in the cell the Greywater Healer had slept in.

I went down at one in the morning with a lamp.

The guard on the stairs looked at my face and unlocked the door without being asked.

Aldous sat on the narrow bench with his torn robe folded in his lap and a clean bandage on his hand.

He looked up and smiled, and for nineteen years I had taken that smile for friendship.

"Magnus. You came."

"Tell me why."

"You know why. I wanted my son to wear your crown."

"You could have asked Jessamine to leave me. You could have asked me for money, a house, a seat. You didn't need to do any of it."

"I needed him first," he said gently. "A seer's son never inherits. A King's son always does."

"My wife's child died because of that."

"Your wife's child died because you wanted to be told he wouldn't."

I stood in the doorway with the lamp shaking.

"I said he would keep," Aldous said. "An hour or two. I said it because you were frightened, and you wanted somebody to say a thing that let you stay in the room."

"You never once asked me what would happen if I was lying."

"You asked what the moon allowed."

"And I told you."

He tilted his head.

"You'd have made a decent King if you'd ever once wanted to be told no."

I should have hit him.

I put the lamp down on the floor, and my hands were steady, and I did not touch him.
