Chapter 11: You Gave Her My No

Marcy was the first to move.

She dabbed under one eye with the folded paper and said, in the small voice, "Greta, honey, it isn't what it sounds like."

"I heard every word."

"You heard half a conversation between two people in grief."

"I heard you say four hundred and twelve thousand dollars."

"Rupert has been very generous to a widow."

"Rupert has been very frightened of a widow," I said. "Sit down, Marcy."

She stayed where she was.

Behind me, the front door opened and shut quietly.

Boots crossed the hall and stopped just inside the room.

I didn't turn.

I didn't have to, because Rupert's eyes had gone past me to the doorway, and his face had changed.

"Rasmussen," he said hoarsely.

"Evening," Cal said. "Don't mind me. I'm furniture."

"You're trespassing."

"I'm a guest of the owner. She's standing right there."

Rupert's mouth worked, and nothing came out.

I took one step toward him.

"On Thursday you held my hand at a table, in front of twenty people," I said.

"I told you the messages were fake. I asked you to open the thread."

"I know."

"You said no."

"I know."

"You looked at me and said, 'Apologize first.'"

"Greta, please."

"I said sorry to that woman for something she wrote herself, and you patted my hand."

I could hear how level my voice was.

I had waited three days to say it, and it came out calm.

"You knew they were fake," I said.

He shut his eyes.

"Marcy told me about them that afternoon," he said. "She said she was going to show them. She said if I didn't back her, she'd go to Carl's parents on Saturday."
