Chapter 7: Open House
The open house sign was staked in the lawn by eleven on Saturday morning, with a bunch of silver balloons tied to the mailbox.
Yvette parked at the curb and looked at the balloons.
"They put balloons on your house," she said.
"It isn't my house."
"They put balloons on the house you paid for."
I held the folder in my lap.
It held the bank's wire confirmation for fifty-two thousand dollars, sent from my savings account to the title company on the day Dalton closed.
The memo line read, in my own typing: Down payment, our home.
At noon I walked in the front door.
The realtor, a brisk woman in a red blazer, was setting out a plate of lemon cookies on my kitchen island.
"Welcome," she said without looking up. "Feel free to look around. The sellers prefer you not to open the closets."
"I'm one of the owners," I said.
She looked up.
"You are?"
"Of the money that bought it."
Behind me, Yvette closed the door and leaned against it with her arms folded.
By twelve-thirty, nine people had wandered in.
A young couple stood in the living room, holding hands and looking at the fireplace.
I stepped in front of them.
"Hi. I'm Willa. I lived here until last week."
"Oh," the wife said. "Are you the previous owner?"
"I'm the one who paid for it."
Her husband's eyebrows rose.
I opened the folder and handed them the wire confirmation.
"That's fifty-two thousand dollars of my savings," I said. "It went into the down payment. My name isn't on the deed. I signed where the man selling this house pointed, and he put his wife on the deed instead."
