Chapter 23: The Invitation on the Table

'Take the microphone back from Maureen,' Curtis said. 'She has already made her point.'

My fingers tightened around it.

He watched me from across the board table. The chair's hand stayed beside the corrected donor materials.

'No,' the chair said. 'Maureen has the floor, and the microphone stays with her.'

The board members kept their eyes on Curtis.

My grip eased. I could speak without asking him for anything.

'I am returning to nursing,' I said. 'I will collect my application and complete the refresher work.'

Curtis gave a short laugh.

'You are turning this into another performance for the room.'

I had carried the pin through every meeting. I had kept it in my purse, where no one needed to see it.

That had been easier for everyone.

I set the microphone against my shoulder and reached into my purse.

The small silver student-nurse pin rested in its pocket. My thumb found the clasp.

I fastened it to my jacket.

No one applauded. I preferred that. Applause would have made this look like a scene Curtis could dismiss.

The nursing-school staff member stood beside the board's papers. She had heard me report the practical assessment result. She had heard Curtis say the original place was gone.

I turned toward her.

'Can you put me on the refresher-work schedule? I will take the next available place.'

The staff member picked up her clipboard.
