Chapter 19: Four Hundred Guests
"Good evening," I said, and my voice came back at me from the speakers, steady.
"Most of you know why we hold this dinner. Tonight I'm going to tell you why I am standing here."
Nobody coughed.
"Just over two weeks ago my four-year-old daughter scalded her arm with a kettle."
"Her father was not home, and neither was I, and there was nobody else in the flat."
I put the flash drive in the laptop on the podium.
"I have the footage. I'm showing it because the woman who kept the original is sitting in the third row."
"She has promised it to a newspaper at nine o'clock. I would rather you saw it from me."
The big screen behind me went white.
Then it filled with a living room at night, and a very small girl asleep on the edge of a sofa with no blanket.
I did not look at it.
I looked at the room, and I watched four hundred faces change.
A woman at the front table put her hand over her mouth.
A man in a dinner jacket turned his head away and could not make himself turn back.
On the screen, the little girl slid off the cushion and hit the brass table, and put both hands over her own mouth.
Someone made a small noise, almost a sob.
I stopped it there.
"That is my daughter," I said. "Her name is Tilly. She is fine. She is safe tonight, and this morning she asked me if she was allowed to say it hurt."
I took a breath.
"She was watched. On the account's viewing list, on both of those nights, is a telephone that belongs to Miss Cressida Sedley."
I put up the page the housekeeper had printed, and the concierge's book, and a page from Rafe's work phone.
"This is the real call she cut a voice note from. This is a cancellation sent from a study she had to herself, while my husband sat in a meeting in Zurich."
"She told me a man frightened her at Hallam Court. The housekeeper there says nobody came through the gate."
In the third row, the thin white-haired man from the board slowly stood up.
He put his napkin down beside his plate.
He did not look at Cressida.
He walked the length of the row, and out through the doors at the side.
