Chapter 13: My Fault

"No," I said.

Scott stood on the sidewalk with the envelope against his chest.

"You don't understand what she'll do with it."

"I understand. I've watched her do things for three years."

"The board called me last night. Four of them." He pushed a hand through his hair. "The hospital wants the Dalton name off the wing, Robin. Just say the camera missed something."

"Did it miss something?"

He didn't answer that.

"Have you read it?" I said.

"She showed it to me after the funeral."

"And you never asked me about it."

"What was there to ask? You wrote that it was your fault."

"I wrote that she was on that road because of me. You never once asked me why."

He looked down at the envelope.

For a second I thought he was going to ask.

Then his phone rang in his pocket.

He looked at the screen, and whatever had opened in his face shut again.

"Noon," he said.

He got back in the SUV and drove away.

At noon I sat on the fold-out bed and didn't turn on the little TV the shop owner had lent me.

At six, a woman from my old church choir sent me a link with no message.

It was Channel Eight.

Scott's mother was sitting in the front room of the gray house, in the blue armchair that had been Kristy's favorite.

The wedding photo in the silver frame was on the table at her elbow, turned toward the camera.

She had her reading glasses on and a single sheet of paper in her lap.

"I didn't want to do this," she said. "I've protected that girl for three years. But after what she did to my son yesterday, people deserve to know who she is."

She unfolded the letter.

I knew every word before she said it.
