Cal reached over and turned the TV off.
The screen went black on my wedding face.
"You don't have to go," he said.
"I know."
"You're going."
"I'm going."
The concert hall downtown had red velvet seats in a long curve and two balconies.
By seven every seat on the main floor was full.
I came in through the side door with Cal, in a plain black dress, walking with my limp.
Heads turned all the way down the rows.
Somebody whispered, "That's her."
The usher was a gray-haired woman with a flashlight.
She looked at Cal, and then at me.
She walked us to the third row without a word and showed us two seats on the aisle.
I looked around once.
Brett's fiancee was in the last row of the main floor, in a dark coat, alone.
The reporter from Channel Eight stood in the side aisle with her cameraman, close to the stage.
In the front row, center, sat Scott's mother in black silk and pearls.
Brett was beside her in a charcoal suit.
He had his arm along the back of her seat.
He turned around and found me, and he winked.
