Chapter 21: Plus Four

I didn't open it in the hall.

I locked my door, pulled the shades, and sat at my crooked kitchen table with my laptop.

The dog came and lay on my feet.

The drive had three files on it.

The first was a text file called "for the nurse."

I opened it.

You said you'd stand next to me when it lands. You don't have to.

I need you on that stage on the 25th, in front of her father, before he signs.

Don't say my name.

This came off a backup they forgot I had. It took me seven weeks to reach it without leaving a log.

I read about the little girl.

I read it twice.

Then I opened the second file.

It was code. Lines and lines of it, gray and green on black.

But one line had a comment next to it, in plain English, the way people write notes to themselves.

I sat back in my chair.

Plus four.

I got up and found the kitchen table ledger in its shoebox, the one Jesse and Ronnie and I had built in January.

I found the night the mailman died.
