Chapter 8: Forty-Nine Dollars

A city bus went by under it with the same ad on its side.

"How many people walk past that every day?" Ronnie said finally.

"Everybody who comes to our ER."

She put the van back in drive.

For the next week it was everywhere. Buses. Radio. A banner under my own video.

TenScore's sign-ups tripled.

On Tuesday, February 3, my phone rang at 4:02 in the morning.

Ronnie.

I knew before I picked up.

"A man died in the waiting room," she said. Her voice was flat and very careful. "Sixty-one. Came in at eleven with indigestion that wasn't indigestion. The screen gave him a 3."

I sat up on the couch.

"Who went ahead of him?"

"Two gold flags. A guy with a sprained ankle. A woman with a migraine." She breathed out. "I moved him up four times, Casey. I wrote it down every time. It put him back every time. My triage nurse found him at 2:40. We worked him forty minutes."

"Where's his wife?"

"She won't leave. She's sitting in her car in the parking ramp. Level three. Security wants to call someone."

"Don't let them. I'm coming."

I couldn't drive yet.

I called Jesse.

He was there in ten minutes, in sweatpants, with a thermos.

He didn't ask a single question. He just drove.

The parking ramp was gray and freezing and smelled like exhaust.

Her car was a tan sedan, parked crooked across two spaces.

She was in the driver's seat with the engine off, holding a plastic bag of his things.

His wallet. His reading glasses. His watch.

I knocked on the passenger window.

She looked at me through the glass.

"You're the nurse," she said. "From the phone."

"Can I sit with you?"

She unlocked the door.

I lowered myself in with my brace stuck out at an angle.

Jesse stood a few cars away, where she could see him.
