Chapter 4: Floor Nine
My mother stepped through the gap in the curtain.
She was not a tall woman.
She had run an elementary school for twenty years, and she took up a room anyway.
My father stood behind her with the car keys in his hand, looking at the floor.
"Diane, please," he said. It was almost a whisper.
She ignored him.
"Darla is in a wheelchair with a blood pressure of one-seventy," my mother said. "Because of you."
"Mom," I said.
"She is thirty weeks pregnant, and you walk into her appointment and make a scene in front of a stranger."
"Mom, the stranger was the sonographer."
"You have been hurting this family since the day your sister died."
The ER had gone quiet around us.
The charge nurse stood at my elbow.
Two nurses from the next bay had stopped what they were doing.
A volunteer with a cart of coffee had stopped pushing it.
"You sat in a closet," my mother said, loudly enough for all of them. "A trained surgeon. You sat on a floor and listened while your baby sister was killed."
I had no answer.
She had said it before, in letters and voicemails, for seven months.
I had never been able to answer her.
I did not remember the last minute. I remembered the supply room, and the dark, and a sound.
After that I remembered a nurse pulling me out by the arm, and my sister's purple scrub top on the floor.
"I'm sorry, Mom," I said. "I'm sorry I didn't remember it right."
"She doesn't get to be sorry," my mother said.
"Diane," the charge nurse said.
It was quiet and level.
"Patsy's friends are standing right here."
"This is a family matter."
"It's a hospital corridor."
