Chapter 12: Plus One
I sent the video of the photographer's screen to three places before I left the parking lot.
Hallie's email, my own, and a cloud folder with a password I made up on the spot.
"A video of a text can be called fake," Hallie said in the car.
"Yes."
"So we post it anyway. Right now. Let the internet do the rest."
"Gwendolyn would say it was edited, and her friends would believe her."
"Then what do we do?"
"We make her say it herself," I said. "In front of the people whose opinion she cares about."
We drove back to the boat shop with the heater on and nobody talking.
Cal was sitting on the loft stairs with his bandaged hand across his knee.
He stood up the moment I came in.
I showed him the clip on my phone, and he watched it twice.
"She told him to catch my face," he said.
"Yes."
"She knew which one of us it was."
"Brooks asked for you by name," I said. "She wanted you under that mask because she knew I would walk out and not look back at him. She wanted a picture of me looking at you."
"And that's the story she has." He gave a short, rough laugh. "A bride who left because of her ex."
"They're making me the one who cheated, Cal."
"Why?"
"So nobody asks for the $48,000," I said. "People don't give money back to a cheater, they say she got what she deserved. That's the whole reason for the mask, the second video, the dawn picture. It was never about being cruel. It was about the money."
