Chapter 10: Mount Haldane
Lena's POV
The medical clinic in Van Nuys opened at seven, and I was its first patient.
The doctor looked at my hands for a long time and said she could sign me fit to fly if I promised not to grip anything I couldn't let go of.
I promised.
By nine I was back at the little airfield, standing on the ramp beside the Cessna with a clean certificate in my pocket and Fred inside the cockpit running through the checklist.
Hayes's black car pulled in behind the hangar.
He got out slowly.
He had on the same gray sweater as before and a face I had never seen on him, gray and set.
He was carrying a manila folder against his chest.
"We agreed," I said. "I do the talking until the thirtieth."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I'm about to break the one rule you gave me," he said. "And I need you to hear why, before you decide what to do about it."
I crossed my arms over the wrapped hands.
"Camille sent this to my office last night," he said. "It's an incident review. Mount Haldane."
My legs went weak on the hot asphalt.
I had not heard that name spoken aloud by anyone but myself in four years.
"She said you never read anything," I said. My voice sounded very far away. "She's right."
"I read it all."
"Hayes."
"The pilot was you." He did not look away. "Your name is on the last page, with your call sign."
I did not answer.
I did not need to.
"You saved the girl," he said. "The board cleared you. It says so on the last page, twice. You weren't at fault."
