Chapter 14: The Vote
Hayes did not come back to the hangar that night.
He sent one text at 2 a.m., and for once it was not an apology.
It said: I filed it. All of it. Come to the board meeting at ten if you want to see what it cost.
I went.
Fred drove me, and neither of us said a word in the elevator to the fortieth floor.
The boardroom was glass on three sides, with the whole gray city lying under it.
Nine people sat around a long table, and the chair of the board sat at the head with a folder in front of him.
Hayes stood at the foot of the table in the same black suit he had worn to the gala.
He had not slept, and he looked lighter.
"Mrs. Grosvenor," the chair said when he saw me. "This is a closed session."
"I'm the reason for it," I said. "I'll stand by the door."
Nobody argued.
"Mr. Grosvenor," the chair said, "please say to the board what you told the state this morning."
"At seven o'clock," Hayes said, "I sent the California aviation authority three documents. The first is the forwarding rule on my phone line, with my signature on it. The second is the order that diverted Guardian One from the Topanga fire road at 4:09 a.m. The third is a statement that I approved that order without asking who else was in danger."
A woman near the middle put her pen down.
"You reported yourself," she said.
"I reported the company. I'm the company."
"You've handed every Sentinel family a lawsuit."
"They've earned one."
The chair opened the folder.
"This morning's filing shows negligence at the highest level, and a regulator will treat it that way. Our insurers have already called. The board cannot keep a chief executive who has confessed to causing a death."
