Chapter 7: Hold Course

The hangar office had one desk, one window and a laptop older than my marriage.

Fred took a flat black memory card from the lining of his cap and slid it into the side of the machine.

Hayes stood by the window with his arms folded.

I sat in the only chair, with the urn on my knees.

"It's the cockpit recorder," Fred said. "The last two minutes before we turned. The radio is the loud part."

"Play it," Hayes said.

Fred pressed a key.

First came engine noise, a steady roar with a hiss laid over it.

Then a click.

Then my voice came out of the laptop speaker, and I did not recognize it.

"Guardian One, Guardian One, this is Lark, on guard. I'm on the Topanga fire road, one mile below the ranch gate. I have a patient. She cannot breathe."

I had not known my voice could sound like that.

It was flat and fast and perfectly clear.

Then it cracked.

"Please. Please land. I'm standing in the road. I have the light."

The engine roared.

Fred's voice came through, younger, rougher.

"Ops, Guardian One. I have a pilot on guard asking for pickup, one mile south of the Topanga gate. Request to divert."

There was a short hiss.

Then Camille.

"Guardian One, Ops. Negative. Hold course."

"Ops, I have a patient in distress. I can see her."

"Hold course, Fred. I know who that is."

My own breath stopped.

"That's Lark," Camille's voice said, pleasant and calm. "She's not a customer. Ignore her and continue to Latigo."

Fred reached out and stopped the recording.
