Chapter 8: Heroes of Fire Season
The Sentinel Heroes of Fire Season dinner was held on the twenty-eighth, in the ballroom of a Malibu hotel with a wall of windows facing the dark Pacific.
Four hundred people came in black tie.
Sentinel customers filled the front tables, and the families who had been evacuated sat close to the stage.
Camille was the guest of honor.
Hayes had left her name on the program, because I told him to.
I came in through the service entrance with Fred, in a plain black dress that someone from the burn clinic had pressed for me.
My dressings were new, and white against the black cloth.
Hayes met us beside the kitchen doors.
He looked at me, and he did not say anything.
I almost smiled.
He was holding to his word so hard that his throat moved when he swallowed.
"The sound booth is at the back," I whispered. "Give the tech this."
I pressed the memory card into his palm, and he closed his fingers around it.
He nodded once.
Then he walked down the long side aisle, not fast, and spoke to a young man with headphones and said nothing else to anyone.
I took my seat at the back table beside Fred.
Camille was already on the stage, in emerald silk with her hair swept up.
Duchess sat in a velvet bed at her feet, wearing a small bow.
The master of ceremonies read from a card.
"Our next award goes to the woman who held the line through the worst fire season in Malibu's history. When the canyon burned, she didn't wait for orders. She sent help."
The room applauded.
