Chapter 21: Slashed
Oliver knelt beside the first trunk and put his hand flat on the cut.
He didn't say anything.
He moved to the second, and then the third, and touched each one the same way.
The cuts went corner to corner across each lid.
Somebody had leaned on the knife.
"Don't touch anything else," I said. "Police."
I rang them from the office floor, sitting among my own pulled-out drawers.
Two officers came at one in the morning.
They wrote down what was missing.
Nothing was missing.
My desk had been emptied onto the floor, every drawer, every folder.
The filing cabinet hung open.
The old laptop lay on the floor, but whoever it was had left it.
"Looking for something," one of the officers said. "Any idea what?"
I thought of the sketchbook in Peggy's cellar, under the hides.
I thought of the New Jersey bag.
My stomach turned over.
"Zoe," I said, and ran.
She was asleep in the box room at Peggy's in an enormous T-shirt.
She sat up blinking when I turned on the light.
"Where's the bag?" I said. "The Haddon bag. From the box."
