He Sent Me Overseas to Marry Her, I'm Staying Overseas to Never See Him Again novel · Chapter 5 of 32

Chapter 5: Four Thousand Labels

I turned the pages slowly.

Photos of the bags on a factory table in New Jersey.

A shipping schedule: four thousand finished in September, four thousand more on a ship in November.

A floor plan for a shop on Mount Street in Mayfair, with HADDON & SONS painted across the window.

Oliver had come to the office door.

He was reading over my shoulder, and I heard his breathing change.

"That's our name," he said.

"That's why he needs my signature." I put my finger on the label photo. "The second these go on sale, clause nine gives you your name back for a pound. Unless the workshop's already been certified and closed."

"Then the clause is dead," Oliver said slowly. "And they're Haddon bags, legally."

"Sewn in New Jersey."

"With glue," Zoe said. "I touched one. It felt like a cereal box."

Oliver walked out of the office without a word.

A moment later we heard a trunk frame go over on the rack, and the old cutter telling him to pick it up.

I looked at Zoe.

"How did you get this?"

"I was the intern. Nobody looks at the intern." She sat on the edge of my desk and finished the croissant. "I did the photocopying for Madison's launch deck. I just did two."

"Tell me about the courthouse."

She told me with her mouth full.

Madison had swept into the elevator on Tuesday morning in a white dress and said she needed a witness and the intern would do.

Zoe thought it was a photoshoot.

She stood on the steps holding a bouquet of white roses while Pierce said "I do" to someone who wasn't me.

"He saw me look at him," Zoe said. "And he winked. Like I was in on it. Like I was a guy at a bar."

She wiped her glasses on her jacket.

"I typed my resignation in the cab back. Then I went home and packed and my mom drove me to JFK."
