He Sent Me Overseas to Marry Her, I'm Staying Overseas to Never See Him Again novel · Chapter 9 of 32

Chapter 9: He Came Alone

I didn't shut the front door.

I stood in it, with the cold lane behind me.

"Get out of her chair," I said.

Pierce looked down at the armchair.

Then he stood up, unhurried, and put the china cup on the mantelpiece.

He was wearing the camel coat I'd bought him for his thirtieth birthday.

"I flew in this afternoon," he said. "Just me. No assistant, no Madison. I came alone, Laura."

"Congratulations. You can fly."

"Can we talk like adults?"

"You married someone else on a Tuesday and texted me that you were in meetings."

He sighed.

"That's what I want to explain."

Upstairs, a door opened.

Zoe appeared on the landing in pajamas with a bowl of cereal.

She saw Pierce.

She put the bowl down on the stairs, very slowly.

"Hi, Zoe," Pierce said warmly.

"Don't," Zoe said.

He turned back to me.

"Madison is paper. That's all she is. Her father's fund is forty percent of the float. He wanted his daughter married into the company before he'd sign, and I needed him to sign. It's a business arrangement."

"It's a marriage."

"On paper." He stepped closer, lowering his voice like it was just us. "You're my life. You've always been my life. Nothing's changed."

"Everything's changed. You just weren't there for it."

The front door creaked wider behind me.

Peggy came in from the lane in her coat, out of breath.

Behind her, half a step back, was Oliver.

She'd seen a strange black car outside her house and a light in her window, and gone straight back for him.
