Chapter 11: What He Owes

The judge gave Redwing a date and nothing else.

The tape stayed in Jonah's pocket, and the hearing was put off until the supervisors finished reading Redwing's logs.

He drove out to the orchard that night in the tow truck and found me in the barn, sitting on the same apple crate he had used.

I had waited all day to ask him.

"Why did you say yes?"

He stopped in the doorway.

"I asked you why," I said. "Twice. You said yes twice, and I want the reason. Not an apology. The reason."

He came in and sat down on the hay bale across from me, with his elbows on his knees.

"I had a mortgage on a house I hadn't slept in for a year," he said. "I had my mother in a care home that Redwing's health plan paid for. I had a boss who'd given me that job when no one else would hire a pilot with my paperwork."

"That's three reasons."

"They're one." His voice was flat. "He called me by my first name, and he said it calmly. He sounded like a man for whom everything was going to be fine. I wanted that to be true."

"Her heart was stopping."

"I know."

"You were looking at the road."

"I was looking at the road," Jonah said. "For nine minutes, I sat on Piper Lanning's lawn with the rotors turning and my hand on the headset. I could have lifted off any second."
