Chapter 6: Public Comment
The county supervisors met on the second Tuesday of every month, in a hall that smelled of floor wax and old coffee.
Item six on the agenda was the renewal of Redwing Air Rescue's three-year fire district contract.
I signed the public comment sheet at the door in my own handwriting: Hannah Teague.
Not Ames.
The room was packed to the back wall.
The orchard families sat in the first four rows, and behind them were faces I knew from the clinic, owners with their cats and their dogs.
The man with the pie had saved me an aisle seat.
Dalton sat in the front row on the left, in a gray suit, with the thin man in the quarter-zip on one side and a gray-haired lawyer on the other.
He saw me come in.
He gave me a small, sad nod, to show everyone he forgave me.
I did not nod back.
When the chair called my name, I walked to the microphone and put my hands flat on the lectern so nobody could see them.
"I have two minutes," I said. "I'm not going to use them to tell you how Redwing works. You know. Most of you pay them nineteen hundred dollars a year to come when you call."
A few people nodded.
"On the night of the Tamarack Fire, I called. My grandmother was dying at mile marker 6, and the helicopter was four minutes out. I'm asking the board one question and I'd like Mr. Ames to answer it under his own name."
The chair looked at Dalton, and then at the lawyer.
"Go ahead, Mrs. Teague."
"Was Aircraft Two already committed to another rescue when my call came in at 4:09?"
Dalton rose from his seat.
He buttoned his jacket.
