Chapter 9: Lunch

Dell took one look at the brown paper bag in Ward's hand and put his apron on a hook.

"I'm going to the lumberyard," Dell said.

"We have lumber," Rett said.

"I'm going to look at more." Dell tapped his watch. "Six hours, maybe seven. They have a lot of boards."

He went out whistling, and the door banged behind him.

Rett put down his pencil.

The drawing under his hand was the fifth try at the rocker's runner joint, and the first four lay crumpled on the floor.

"It's Tuesday," Rett said. "It's noon. It's daylight."

"It's lunch." Ward set the bag on the bench and unpacked it. "Food is food. Those are the rules."

"You looked up the rules?"

"I wrote them down."

He had brought two foam boxes of shrimp and grits, a pint of chicory coffee, and a paper cup of sweet tea.

Rett eyed the coffee.

"How do you know how I take it?" he asked.

"Black, with one sugar and no cream. You stir it with whatever's closest, and you drink it cold."

"I never told you that."

"You stirred my coffee with a pencil on Saturday, in the car," Ward said.

"I did not have coffee in the car."

"You took mine when I wasn't looking." Ward handed him a plastic fork. "I noticed."

Rett took the fork and said nothing.

He sat down on his stool, and Ward took the one across the bench, and they ate in silence.
