Chapter 17: The Page
By nine that night, the salon clip had four million views.
Stefano sat on the suite's sofa with his phone held at arm's length, reading the comments aloud in a theatrical voice.
"'Colette, babe, we saw you.' 'Not the beads.' 'The beads were a hate crime.' Allegra, this one is from a fashion editor. She wants to know who did your hair."
"I did my own hair," I said.
"I'll tell her it was a stylist. Better for your brand."
"I don't have a brand."
"Everyone has a brand, cousin. Yours is 'quietly lethal.'"
I laughed, which surprised me.
The door opened without a knock, and I looked up.
Tobias stood in it, in yesterday's shirt, with a manila envelope under his arm and a grey face from a day without sitting down.
"Stefano," I said, "go and find my mother."
"She's down the hall."
"Then go and stand next to her."
He went, whistling, and the door closed behind him.
Tobias put the envelope on the desk.
"The buyer's closing schedule," he said. "I got it from Dominic's assistant. It lists every signer, and the order they sign in."
"Thank you."
"I read it twice."
"I'm sure you did."
I took a single sheet of paper from the writing desk and slid it across to him, with a pen.
"This is the plan for Saturday," I said. "Where you stand, what you do when the screen comes on, who you don't look at. Sign at the bottom so I know you've got it."
He took the pen.
He didn't look at the page.
He looked at me, with red eyes and a day of stubble, and he signed his name at the bottom in one stroke.
