Chapter 21: The Answer
Colette's fingers held my sleeve so hard that the silk pulled.
The whole room could see us.
Three hundred guests stood among the white roses with their phones raised, and none of them was pretending anymore.
"Say it," she begged. "You always say it. You always laugh and say, 'That's just Colette.' Say it was a joke, Allegra, and they'll stop."
For ten years, I had said it.
I had said it at dinners, in group chats, to my own mother, in a doorway with my heart breaking.
I looked at the hand on my sleeve.
I took it off, one finger at a time, and I let it go.
"No," I said. "It wasn't a joke, and I'm not laughing."
Her face crumpled.
She didn't scream.
She only stood there with her mouth open and her veil hanging off one shoulder, and for the first time in her life, nobody was giving her what she asked for.
Nobody comforted her.
Four women in blush satin stood at the edge of the dance floor, and not one of them took a step.
"Colette," Dominic said hoarsely, across the floor. "Colette, don't talk to her."
She didn't turn.
He was coming toward us, with the microphone still in his fist.
"This is a setup," he said, loud enough for the room. "It's a recording of a game night. I was being funny. It's hers, she planned this with her cousin."
"Mr. Crewe."
The venue manager stood at his elbow.
He was a heavy, calm man in a black suit, flanked by two others who had been standing by the doors all evening.
"I've been asked to see you out," he said.
