Chapter 12: The Photograph
By Monday morning, the photograph was on every phone in Cambridge.
PRIZE-WINNING SCIENTIST'S SECRET LAB AFFAIR BEFORE DIVORCE, said the first headline I saw, over the picture of the two of us in the alley.
Under it, in smaller print: Source close to the VanBuren family says the doctor deceived her grieving husband.
Six cameras stood outside the lab door when I got there at eight.
A woman in a red coat held a microphone against my chin before I'd found my keys.
"Dr. Wrenfield, did you have an affair with Dr. Seidel while you were married?"
Alasdair appeared at my shoulder, and I put a hand flat against his arm to hold him still.
"Let me do this one," I said.
The camera lights turned on.
"I'll answer that once," I said. "Then I won't answer it again."
The woman in the red coat leaned in.
"On the second Sunday of March, I buried my brother-in-law. At the funeral, my husband's mother slapped his widow in front of two hundred people. My husband stepped in front of her, held her, and did not look at me."
"You were married to him," someone said from the back.
"I was. For three years. During that time he was in love with her, and everyone in his family knew it."
Nobody spoke.
"That night I put a petition for divorce in front of him with a stack of other forms, and he signed it without reading a word. The judge stamped it in June. Anyone can see the date."
"And Dr. Seidel?"
"Dr. Seidel is my colleague and the man I'm seeing," I said. "I met him because he ran my brother-in-law's last trial. I was already gone from that marriage the week I signed it. If that makes me a villain to the VanBurens, I'm sorry for them."
