I stood in his kitchen in his shirt and read the note again.
Stay dead one more day.
He had kissed me, and then he had taken the one thing that could hang his father.
I called the number he'd used last night.
It rang out.
I called again.
It went straight to a recording.
I called Paloma.
"Lucio left at two in the morning," she said. "He drank all my coffee and looked in every closet. I'm fine. Where are you?"
"Rocco took the tape."
"Took it where?"
"I don't know."
She was quiet for a second.
"Mari. Maybe he's making a copy. Maybe he's taking it to a lawyer."
"Or maybe he's taking it to his father."
"You don't believe that."
I looked at the empty place in the tin.
"I don't know what I believe anymore."
"The rehearsal dinner is tonight," Paloma said slowly. "At the Ashgrove. Bellweather is doing it. The whole family. Both families."
