Chapter 16: Kill Order Kiss

I went down on my knees with him.

The room was screaming.

Chairs went over.

Glasses broke.

Someone was yelling, "FBI! Drop it! Drop it now!"

I didn't look.

I pressed both hands flat on Rocco's shoulder, the way my father taught me to press a kitchen towel on a bad cut.

I pressed harder than felt right.

The blood came up warm between my fingers.

"Look at me," I said. "Rocco. Look at me."

His eyes opened.

"Mari."

"Don't you dare. Don't you dare die at your own wedding."

He almost laughed.

"Not my wedding," he said. "I said no."

Over his head, I saw Tom Halvorsen twist Aurelio's arm up behind his back.

The little pistol clattered across the dance floor.

A waiter who wasn't a waiter kicked it away.

Aurelio went down onto his knees on the parquet, in front of three hundred guests.

His silver hair fell in his face.

Nobody helped him up.

"Aurelio Ricci," Halvorsen said, loud enough for the back row. "You're under arrest for the murder of Ignacio Cordero and the attempted murder of Mariana Cordero."

"I'm an old man," Aurelio said. "Mind my cane."

"You don't have a cane anymore," Halvorsen said.

On the other side of the aisle, Carmine was trying to get to the side door.

He was big and slow, and the white rose on his lapel was falling apart.

Two agents caught him before he got halfway.

They pushed him face down across the table of wedding favors.

Little silver boxes went everywhere.

"Carmine Greco," one of them said. "Murder. Extortion. Racketeering."

They pulled his right hand behind his back.

The wolf ring glinted under the chandelier as the cuffs closed over it.

He twisted his head and found me across the room.

"You were nine!" he shouted. "You saw nothing!"

"I saw your ring," I said.

Everyone heard it.

They walked them both down the center aisle, past every guest.

Past the Ricci captains and the Greco cousins.

Past the flowers and the string quartet.

Past the big screen, where my father's restaurant was still frozen on the last frame.

Nobody said goodbye to them.

At the altar, Gemma Greco stood alone in her white silk.

Her mascara was running down to her chin.

She looked at the guests.
