Chapter 4: Redbank

"I don't know what that means," I said.

"I think you do." He kept his voice low. "Or you will."

The receptionist had stopped pretending to type.

A courier at the desk had stopped too.

"Dorian Ashe," the man said, and held out a hand. "Alpha of Redbank."

I did not take it.

"Odette Swinburne. I'm leaving."

"Swinburne." He nodded slowly. "Your grandmother is Mabel."

"How do you know my grandmother?"

"I don't. I knew your mother."

The marble floor seemed to tilt.

My mother had died when I was four.

I had one photograph of her, and nobody in Ironwood had ever said her name in my hearing.

"You're lying," I said.

"I held her hand at a funeral when I was eleven." His smile was gone. "She was the bravest woman in three packs, and I would know that scent anywhere. I thought the last of that line was dead."

"What line?"

"Ask Mabel," he said. "She'll tell you or she won't. But I'll say this where you can hear it. Redbank has a table, and there is a chair at it with your name on it."

"I don't want a chair."

"You quit this morning." He glanced at the keys I no longer carried. "You'll want one by Friday."
