Chapter 10: Business Only, Ms. Winslow

I called Nathaniel first, and my lawyer second.

He came up the stairs in ten minutes, in a black coat over a shirt he had clearly pulled on in the dark.

He took one look at Madison on my bed, and at the folder, and at my face.

"Nobody moves," he said. "Everyone stays."

He made two calls.

By midnight, one of his security men was in my kitchen, and a car had taken Madison to a hotel with a guard on her door.

She went without arguing.

At the threshold she turned and looked at me.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me," she said.

"Good," I said.

My lawyer arrived at one, read the folder with her coat still on, and put each page into a plastic sleeve.

"I'll tell you what the police will tell you," she said. "A pill prescription and a copy of a key are not a crime. A date in a calendar is not a crime."

"He wrote my name next to the word done."

"It's evidence of intent that I'd love to have in a courtroom. It's not enough for an arrest." She snapped the folder shut. "Keep your door locked. Don't take anything from his hands. Don't be alone."

She left.

The security man took a chair in the hall.

That left Nathaniel and me in a room with one chair, one bed and one folding table.

"You should go," I said.

"I'll go when you're asleep."

"I won't be asleep."
