Chapter 8: Zero Percent
Patricia walked to the stage in her pearls, and nobody stopped her.
Trevor tried.
"Mom, not now."
"Sit down, Trevor."
She had used that voice on him when he was nine.
He sat on the edge of the stage.
Patricia took the microphone from my hand.
"Good evening," she said. "Three weeks ago, in this city, my son stood on a roof and told two hundred people his girlfriend was carrying my grandchild."
"I cried. I told everyone I was happy."
She turned to Madison.
"I asked this young woman for a blood test. She agreed because I promised to pay for the nursery."
Madison's face went the color of her gown.
"Patricia, please," she whispered. "Not in front of everyone."
"You like an audience, dear," Patricia said. "You have six hundred."
She opened the envelope.
"This is a prenatal paternity report from a licensed laboratory. It compares the baby's DNA to my son's."
Six hundred phones went up.
"Probability of paternity," Patricia read, "zero percent."
The atrium went quiet except for the cameras.
"That's impossible," Trevor said. "She's carrying my child."
"Three years ago you had a vasectomy," Patricia said. "You told your wife to keep the secret."
She held up a second sheet.
"Here is the clinic's letter, dated three years ago, with your signature."
"Mom."
"You let me call that woman barren."
Her voice broke on the last word, and then she steadied it.
"You let me say it at Christmas, in front of the family. You let her take injections for three rounds so your board would think you wanted a child."
