Chapter 11: What He Did

Brody's POV

I stood in my doorway until I couldn't hear her on the stairs.

Then I put on a shirt and went down after her anyway.

Not to stop her. She had walked out without looking back, and I'd learned that much about her.

By the time I reached the porch she was gone.

Nate stood in the yard with a beer in his hand and his face gone serious.

"She walked past me and didn't even slow down," he said. "What did you do?"

"I told her the truth."

"All of it?"

"Enough."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Okay," he said. "I'll follow her. Far back. She won't see me."

"She'll see you."

"Then she'll see me."

He was gone before I could thank him.

I should have gone to the library myself. I'd have felt better.

Instead I did the other thing I'd been putting off for three weeks.

I walked to Linden Street.

The apartment complex was a block from campus, three floors of beige stucco and bad parking.

Kayla's light was on.

I knocked once.

She opened the door in sweatpants and a tank top, with her hair in a loose knot.

Her eyes went wide before she could put anything over them.

"Brody."

"Hi."

"Oh my God, you didn't have to come."

She stepped into the hall and shut the door behind her.

"I wanted to explain. About her. About the video and the rink. It got out of hand."
