Chapter 12: The New Term

I worked the library front desk on Saturday morning on two hours of sleep.

At nine, I scanned a stack of textbooks for a boy who didn't make eye contact.

At ten, I looked up and Cody was standing at the other side of the counter.

He wasn't wearing the hoodie.

He had on a plain blue shirt, and he'd shaved.

He held his hands flat on the counter where I could see them.

"I know you don't want to see me," he said.

"I'm working."

"I'll be quick."

I looked at the clock above the door.

"You've got five minutes."

He nodded.

"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said. "I want to say it right, because I didn't on the porch."

I waited.

"I slept with Kayla for six weeks, and I knew it was wrong the whole time.

"I knew it every time you texted me good morning."

His voice shook, and he didn't stop.

"I let you carry a cake up those stairs.

"I could have ended it any day. I didn't, because it was easy."

I put down the scanner.

"Okay," I said.

"That's not an excuse."

"No. It isn't."

"I'm not asking you to say it's fine."

"Good, because it isn't."

He took a breath.

"There's one thing I have to tell you," he said. "I'm not saying it as an excuse. You need to know what she told me."

"Brody's version?"

"Kayla's."

I leaned on the counter.

"She gave me a story about you and the captain, back in September," he said. "A cheating one."

"There was no story. I didn't even know his name until the morning after the party."

"I know that now. I believed her." He looked at the counter. "I told myself that if you'd already moved on, then it didn't matter what I did. I told myself we were even."
