Chapter 4: Terms

At one in the morning, I was sitting at the kitchen table with a bag of frozen peas on my ankle.

I had fallen twice on the walk home across the ice.

Brody had pulled me up both times and said nothing, which was worse than a lecture.

Now he stood at the counter with his back to me, making toast in my toaster.

"Brody."

"Hm."

"Why did you do that?"

He turned around with two slices on a plate.

He set it in front of me and sat across the table.

"Kayla made you look pitiful in front of three hundred people," he said. "I didn't like it."

"That isn't a reason. That's a feeling."

"It's what I've got."

I waited.

He ate a piece of toast and chewed it for a long time.

"Look," he said. "By Monday, the whole school will think I'm your boyfriend. Either I tell them I made a joke at your expense, or we let it stand."

"Let it stand how long?"

"Two weeks. Homecoming is on the fourteenth. We go to the game, we go to the party, and after that we had a quiet breakup and nobody remembers either of us."

I put the peas down.

"You want a fake girlfriend."

"I want you to not be the girl they feel sorry for." He turned his glass of water a quarter turn on the table. "That's all."

That wasn't all. I could see it.

But he had put his hand out in front of three hundred people when I couldn't speak, and I owed him something for that, whether he knew it or not.

And I wanted it.

I wanted to stand next to Kayla and Cody with someone who wasn't them.
